For some of us, Thanksgiving may be different this year. This may create feelings of sadness, frustration, and anxiety. But I want you to know I am here with you. I encourage you to honor your feelings – really allowing yourself to feel whatever you are feeling. We can feel sad for the changes imposed upon us, but grateful at the same time for all that we do have.

Although this Thanksgiving will be different, we can still make it memorable. Sometimes I think to myself, ‘Damn, talking about gratitude is so played out! How many times can I talk about gratitude?’ But then I remember gratitude is like a magic pill. When you find yourself going down the rabbit hole, gratitude can bring you back.

I met with a lady this week that was a godsent. I was falling down that damn rabbit hole when I heard about another shut down, but she was so optimistic and joyful. I asked what her secret is for her positivity. She told me she had immigrated to the United States from a third world country where she witnessed so much poverty and struggle. She loves being in the United States and she takes tremendous pride in all she’s been able to accomplish. Her work ethic and successes are impressive. Even today after losing her job, she said she didn’t have anything to complain about. She’s grateful to have a warm home, a loving family, and food on her table. What’s her true secret? She practices gratitude every day!

Along with practicing gratitude, fun and laughter are necessary this Thanksgiving. Something my family, friends and I do when we sit together is talk about all funny shit we’ve done or funny moments we experienced. Memories are priceless and when we recount these fun times, it’s like they’re happening all over again. Our minds can’t tell the difference whether it’s now or in the past, and we get that awesome dose of dopamine. Plus, it’s so much more fun to laugh then frown!

Another option to give you a boost of dopamine this Thanksgiving is to put on music and dance. Even better, Zoom your besties and dance together! Have a dance off - remember those?!! If you have a Karaoke machine, get that baby out!

If you’re cooking at home, make it a family affair. Get together in the kitchen and cook together. There is a reason that the kitchen is where most of us congregate - it’s a soulful place, with plenty of comfort found in the food and warmth.

Whatever you choose to do this Thanksgiving, I’m sending you an abundance of joy, love, laughter and positive vibes. I would also like to take this opportunity to tell you how much I appreciate you for being part of my community, and for welcoming me into your day.

Happy Thanksgiving!
