The warm and beautiful colors of fall are starting to peak all around us, which also means Halloween is right around the corner. It’s such an exciting time, especially for kids. I remember being so excited to go to Kmart and pick out my costume complete with a plastic mask.

But as adults, wearing a mask isn’t always fun. Many of us choose to wear a wide range of “masks” in real life to hide who we really are because we’re scared to show people our true selves.

Masking our true selves

Our masks serve a purpose. They keep us safe; from judgement, from criticism, from hatred. But they also keep us from knowing an essential truth – that we are worthy without them, we are enough without them. All we need to be is exactly who we are … and own it.

Lifting the mask

Life is such beautiful gift! Living behind a “mask” stops us from experiencing the fulfilling adventures it has to offer.

If you fear taking off your “mask”, set an intent to start being vulnerable and open with someone you really love and trust. Just taking that small step will help you begin to feel comfortable just being you. You will find tremendous power in doing this, especially when all you want to do is run and hide.

Look to others

If you’re finding it hard to do this, look to others who own who they are, imperfections and all. Let them inspire you - as they have me - to consistently work on being open and vulnerable. It isn’t easy, but I know it has helped me see life through a completely different set of eyes. It’s also allowed me to connect to others in a real and authentic way.

What steps are you going to take today to lift the mask you’re wearing so you can live a more fulfilling and passionate life?
