These past few months, I bet you’ve been indulging in some delicious food combined with a side of prolonged screen time. As much fun as it is to enjoy some downtime, and all the scrumptious creations coming out from home or takeout kitchens, this combination is a recipe for lethargy. And feeling like crap for too long can have a real impact on your immune system.

Why moving your body is so tremendously important

Staying stagnant has a major impact on our physical and mental health. Studies have shown that committing to an exercise lifestyle can not only boost your immune system, but reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

It’s also a fabulous antidote for depression. When we move our bodies, we release feel-good endorphins. They boost our energy levels, blood circulation and overall confidence. This all combines to give us a healthy glow that comes from the inside out - one you definitely can’t get with Botox!

Exercise is also an amazing stress reliever. Let’s be real - we’re all going through a really stressful time right now, and moving our bodies keeps us grounded and connected to the creative side of our brain. This helps us identify solutions, rather than being stuck in a lethargic ‘frozen’ state.

Start slow

I understand thinking about starting an exercise program can be scary. The time commitment. The financial commitment. Driving to the gym or studio. Feeling self-conscious about even being in the gym (hey, the gyms and studios will eventually open!). When we think about all these factors at once, it can be overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be.

You don’t have to start with an hour workout, or even have a gym membership. You don’t even need to start with a 30 minute workout! Start with just 15 minutes a day. Go for a walk or bike ride around your neighborhood, or put on your favorite play list at home and dance it out for 15 minutes. You could also jump on YouTube and find a workout routine that matches your skills and interests – there are thousands to choose from.

Commit to it

The key to reaping the benefits of exercise is to make it a daily habit. This requires commitment and discipline. I recommend you calendar it into your diary, otherwise it may not get done.

Start with 15 minutes a day for two weeks, than increase it to 30 minutes a day for two weeks. Once you’ve hit that time frame, up to 45 minutes a day for a fortnight and so on. And yes, it is ok if you skip a day here and there. It won’t kill you.

The time is now

Right now, it’s more important than ever to focus on your health. Don’t put it in the hands of others – take accountability for it yourself and commit to a healthier you. You have all the tools within you, so make it your number one priority today to get in that 15 minutes!
